Our 2010 line-up will take you on three different and captivating journeys. Stylish and sexy, Carmen, festive favourite, The Nutcracker and From Here To There - an elegant trio of works from New Zealand and overseas - make for a year of irresistible charm.
Kicking off the year, the TOWER Season of From Here to There, features a new commission by Kiwi choreographer Andrew Simmons. One of New Zealand’s hottest emerging choreographic talents, Simmons is also a former Royal New Zealand Ballet dancer. His work A Song in the Dark, which embraces themes of missed opportunities, love and beauty in the ordinary; keeps good company with another new work and the return of one of our most acclaimed pieces. UK-based choreographer Christopher Hampson, who thrilled audiences with his versions of Romeo & Juliet and Cinderella, returns to premiere Poulenc Variations – a stylish number featuring dancers decked out in black tutus. Finally, David Dawson’s visually spectacular A Million Kisses to My Skin, returns to embrace audiences. Defining and defying the art of movement, it comes to life to JS Bach’s Piano Concerto No. 1.
Mid-year we’re bringing sexy back with The Meridian Season of Carmen. This electrifying contemporary ballet set in modern day Rio de Janeiro has been hailed as “brilliant dance theatre” and a “raunchy production not to be missed”. As the world’s most famous seductress, there’s no doubt Carmen will add some heat to the New Zealand winter.
We end the year with a much-requested festive favourite. The Nutcracker is the quintessential Christmas ballet. Not ones to stick to conformity, the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s version has a twist. Set in a children’s hospital, this colourful and creative production is fun for the whole family.
RNZB Artistic Director Gary Harris says the 2010 line-up provides the perfect platform to highlight the talents of the RNZB dancers. “The aim of 2010 is to give New Zealanders a bit of an assortment of treats, from classical to contemporary. We are thrilled to have two new commissions as part of our triple bill. It’s also nice to see Carmen returning to strut her stuff and, of course, what better way to end the year than with something our pint-sized fans will enjoy too?”
